# Teeth Whitening in Sofia: Price, Types and How Long the Effect Lasts

**In-office teeth whitening at SF Dent costs 230.00€, and at-home whitening with trays costs 128.00€. With both methods, the result depends on the original tooth colour, lifestyle and aftercare. A check-up is always done before whitening, to remove tartar and surface staining.**

## In-office or at-home whitening - what's the difference

In-office whitening is done at the clinic, using a higher concentration whitening gel, usually activated with light. The procedure takes one visit and the result is visible immediately afterwards.

At-home whitening uses individually made trays, which the patient wears at home according to the dentist's instructions, with a lower gel concentration over a longer period. With both options, teeth become lighter than their original colour, but no dentist can promise a specific shade in advance.

A detailed comparison between the two methods can be found in [our article on teeth whitening](https://sfdent.eu/en/services/whitening).

## How much does teeth whitening cost

According to SF Dent's current price list, the prices are as follows:

- In-office whitening – 230.00€
- At-home whitening – 128.00€
- Pre-procedure check-up – 30.00€

## Why a check-up is a mandatory step before whitening

Before any whitening, tartar removal and polishing are done, because the whitening gel only works on the tooth itself, not on surface deposits. If there is tartar or surface staining from coffee, tea or tobacco, the whitening result will be uneven.

These procedures are separate from the whitening itself: tartar removal – 72.00€, airflow polishing – 26.00€. The dentist assesses at the check-up whether they are needed and to what extent.

## Who whitening is not suitable for

Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, for very sensitive teeth, untreated tooth decay or inflamed gums, as well as for crowns, veneers and fillings on the front teeth - these do not change colour and will remain a different shade from the whitened natural teeth.

Whitening is usually not applied to children and adolescents with teeth that are not yet fully matured. The final assessment is always made in person, after a check-up.

## How long the effect lasts and what shortens it

The whitening effect is not permanent - over time teeth gradually darken again, especially with consumption of staining foods and drinks, smoking and poor hygiene. Regular preventive care visibly extends the result.

To keep the achieved shade for as long as possible, dentists recommend periodic polishing and home care, as well as limiting strongly staining foods and drinks in the first days after the procedure, when teeth are more prone to staining.

## When to see a dentist and when it's urgent

If after whitening you feel increased sensitivity to cold and heat that does not subside within a few days, it is advisable to consult your dentist. The same applies if you notice gum irritation after wearing at-home whitening trays.

An emergency is different - severe pain, swelling of the face or gums, fever or difficulty swallowing require immediate help, not just a whitening appointment.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does teeth whitening hurt

For most patients the procedure is painless, but temporary sensitivity to cold and heat is possible, especially with in-office whitening. It usually passes on its own after a short time.

### How much does teeth whitening cost in Sofia

At SF Dent, in-office whitening costs 230.00€, and at-home whitening with individual trays - 128.00€. The price does not include the pre-procedure check-up, which is charged separately.

### Is tartar removal needed before whitening

Yes, tartar removal and polishing are a mandatory step, because the whitening gel does not work effectively on deposits and surface staining. The dentist assesses the extent of cleaning needed at the check-up.

### How long does the whitening effect last

The effect gradually fades over time, especially with consumption of staining foods, drinks and smoking. Regular check-ups and polishing help the result last longer.

### Who is whitening not suitable for

Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with untreated tooth decay or inflamed gums, or with very sensitive teeth. Crowns, veneers and fillings on the front teeth do not react to the whitening gel.
