# Tooth extraction and wisdom tooth removal

**A tooth extraction is a procedure in which the dentist removes a tooth that cannot be saved with treatment. At SF Dent the price depends on the type of tooth: for example a wisdom tooth extraction is 200.00 €, and an impacted (unerupted) wisdom tooth is 350.00 € on the clinic's price list. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic.**

Dentists aim to keep your own tooth whenever possible. Extraction is recommended when a tooth is badly broken down, has an advanced infection that cannot be cured, is very loose, is a wisdom tooth causing problems, or for orthodontic reasons.

The price depends on the tooth – how many roots it has, whether it is broken, and whether a wisdom tooth has come through, has partly come through (semi-impacted) or is fully in the bone (impacted). Anaesthesia and suture removal are separate lines on the price list. We will tell you the exact price for your case after an examination.

## Extraction under the health fund (NHIF / НЗОК)

SF Dent works with the NHIF (НЗОК), Bulgaria's National Health Insurance Fund. Some extraction work can be done under the health fund within the NHIF's annual package if your health insurance rights are uninterrupted. We will confirm when you book whether your extraction can be covered. Read more on the page [Dentist under the NHIF (НЗОК)](https://sfdent.eu/en/services/dentist-nhif-health-insurance).

## Who performs the procedure

Extractions at SF Dent are performed by [Dr. Sandy Festok](https://sfdent.eu/en/team/dr-sandy-festok). Children are seen by our children's dentist, including for the removal of baby teeth.

## How an extraction works – steps

1. **Examination and X-ray.** The dentist examines the tooth and, if needed, takes an X-ray to see the roots and nearby structures. Tell the dentist about every medicine you take – especially blood thinners – and about any long-term conditions.
2. **Local anaesthetic.** The area is numbed. During the extraction you may feel pressure, but you should not feel sharp pain.
3. **Removing the tooth.** An erupted tooth is usually removed with instruments, without an incision. An impacted or semi-impacted wisdom tooth may need a small cut in the gum, and sometimes the tooth is removed in sections.
4. **Closing the socket.** You bite on gauze to stop the bleeding. After a more complex extraction the wound is stitched.
5. **Instructions and follow-up.** You receive instructions for home care. If there are stitches, a visit is booked to remove them.

## How long it takes

Removing an erupted tooth usually takes a short time – often from a few minutes to about half an hour, including preparation. Removing an impacted wisdom tooth is more complex and takes longer. The gum heals over a few weeks and the bone takes longer. The dentist will tell you after the examination how long your extraction is likely to take.

## Aftercare

- Bite on the gauze for 10–15 minutes so the bleeding stops and a clot forms.
- Do not eat until the anaesthetic wears off, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue.
- For the first 24 hours do not spit hard, rinse vigorously or drink through a straw – this can dislodge the clot.
- Do not smoke for at least a few days – smoking slows healing and raises the risk of an inflamed socket (dry socket).
- A cold compress on the outside of the cheek helps with swelling on the first day.
- Take only medicines your dentist has recommended.
- Contact the clinic if bleeding is heavy or does not stop, if pain gets worse after the third day, or if you have a fever or pus.

### What to eat after a tooth extraction

Once the anaesthetic has worn off, start with soft, lukewarm foods – yoghurt, mash, soup (not hot), porridge. Chew on the other side. Avoid hard, sticky and very hot foods and alcohol for the first days. Return to your usual diet gradually as the socket stops being sensitive.

## What to tell the dentist before an extraction

- which medicines you take, especially blood thinners, and whether you have recently taken an antibiotic;
- whether you have long-term conditions – for example diabetes, heart disease or a bleeding disorder;
- whether you are pregnant;
- whether you have allergies, including to anaesthetics or medicines.

Do not stop a medicine prescribed by another doctor on your own – the dentist will decide whether any change is needed and, if so, will consult your doctor.

## Wisdom tooth removal

Wisdom teeth are the last molars and often do not have enough room to come through properly. Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. Removal is recommended, for example, with repeated inflammation of the gum around the wisdom tooth, decay that cannot be treated, damage to the neighbouring tooth, or when an impacted wisdom tooth is causing problems. The decision is made after an examination and an X-ray.
