Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed in the jaw to provide a stable foundation for dentures or bridges. They are made of materials such as titanium and are used to replace missing teeth, restore oral function and improve aesthetics.

There are several types of dental implants, including:

  • One-piece implants: These are the most common type of implant, consisting of a single component - a titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone. After it heals (about 3 to 6 months), a dental crown is attached to the implant.
Two-piece implants: These implants consist of two parts - a titanium screw and an abutment (abutment). The abutment is connected to the screw and serves as a support for a traditional denture or bridge.
  • Minimally Invasive Implants: These implants are designed to minimize discomfort and treatment time by using shorter implants or alternative placement methods.
  • Bone grafting or augmentation implants: Sometimes the jawbone may not be strong or voluminous enough to support an implant. In these cases, bone grafting or augmentation of the implant may be required to create a suitable base.
  • Closed Transfer Implants: This type of implant allows immediate loading immediately after implantation, meaning the patient can wear temporary teeth while the implant integrates with the jawbone.

Placing a dental implant usually involves the following steps:

  • Consultation and planning: Your dentist will perform a thorough oral examination, X-rays and possibly a CT scan to determine if you are a suitable candidate for an implant and to plan the procedure.
  • Implant placement: Under local anesthesia, the implant is placed in the jawbone. The bone healing process (osseointegration) takes 3 to 6 months, during which time the implant must be protected from mechanical stress.
  • Opening surgery: Once the implant is fully integrated with the jawbone, opening surgery is performed. The tip of the implant is exposed and a cap or abutment is placed over it.
  • Completion: Finally, a dental crown, bridge, or denture is attached over the implant to complete the restoration process.

The successful placement and integration of a dental implant depends on a variety of factors, including the overall health of the patient, the condition of the jawbone, and post-operative care. Regular dental visits and good oral hygiene are essential to maintaining the long-term success of a dental implant.
